Spring Awakening is a 'coming of age' musical written by Stephen Sater and muscic by Duncan Sheik. It is based on the 1891 German play, Spring Awakening, by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th century provincial Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of adolescant sexuality.
It opened on Broadway in 2006 and was an instant hit, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Featured Actor. A West End production debuted in 2009, winning four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.
